I caved and bought a single din headunit for the S10. A Kenwood KDC-125U with USB hookup and all that jazz.

Kinja'd!!!

The mounting hardware Crutchfield gives you with it centers it in the hole rather than putting a stupid tiny cubby below it so it shouldn’t look too bad.

Kinja'd!!!

And of course, I can just buy a headunit and keep the lame-o factory speakers, so I ordered Infinity Reference REF speakers. 6-3/4" for the doors and 4x6" for the dash. All four have built-in tweeters.

Kinja'd!!!

Then it occurred to me, I’m gonna have a red head unit with white-green cluster lights. Can’t have that now can we? So I ordered red LED bulbs for my gauge cluster and HVAC controls.

Kinja'd!!!

I also got an LED dome bulb, just because.

I’m already falling down the customization hole and I haven’t even had the truck a week. Oh god.

Focus on quality of life mods for the truck. A decent sound system will make driving the truck that much more enjoyable.

Beware of fitment issues. Crutchfield sucks ass.

My dad ordered all his truck speakers from Crutchfield and didn't have an issue. Though they did seem to ignore the fact that S10s have dash speakers. Some quick research on S10 forums helped with sizes though.

0/10 would recommend.

Bought a $300 head unit for my A6. For one the head unit was a piece of shit, then it had different connectors than the one in my car, called Crutfheidl and Fandishnu had me solder the connector thing to make it work. Then it worked, but the radio kept cutting out and refusing to turn on, among other issues. I called back and tried to return it. They told me no-can-do, so I threw it in the trash.

Cheap chinese/noname 2din eh? They’re insanely hit and miss, or the people i hear who are happy with theirs are just blind to the issues.

It was a Jensen head unit.

Total piece of shit, it made me miss my stock radio.

That’s why a bought a headunit I already had experience with. Well, it’s the newer version of what I had in the M3. I know the speakers fit, and if for some stupid reason the connector isn't right, my dad has the skill to make his own probably.

lol exact opposite experience. Crutchfield support walked me through a really tricky steering wheel control module when I was under the gun on a clients car. I only order from them for my clients, everything ships next day and returns are a breeze!

Never go for cheap brands for radios, only get them from Pioneer, Kenwood, Blaupunkt, Alpine or Clarion. JVC and Sony might also work but I have heard that some of their products aren’t very good.

I feel like the Germans are partially to blame. They are a bit finicky with radios and electrics.

Gm is also pretty easy to wire stuff info.

I like the little cubby under my S10s headunit. My phone fits there perfectly.

Remote control?

I love my remote. I hate losing it in the cushions at 70 mph but it is sweet.

That looks good and not super gaudy like other HUs good on you to match the red lights!

That's what drew me to the previous version when I went looking for an HU for the M3. It's one of the cleanest aftermarket designs I could find.

Thankfully my lights are way easier to change than my dad’s were. Twist in bulbs rather than having to solder all of them in.

I think it has one. Though it’ll probably just get tossed in the glovebox like the one the M3's HU came with.

Something about knowing that it's there because it isn’t the properly sized radio bugs the hell out of me. I genuinely don’t know why.

With yours being an ‘02, your S10s dash is different from mine. The cubby hole I have was there even with the stock stereo.

Kinja'd!!!

(not mine pictured but that’s almost certainly the radio mine came with)

Be prepared for an absolutely shitty user interface. Last car I bought had one similar to that in it (less angular-looking buttons but exact same arrangement and labels) and it’s clear that the “features” engineers and the “interface” engineers never spoke.

Oh, who am I kidding, there were never any interface engineers .

GM’s incredible forward thinking even made that hole a perfect fit for the iPhone 6 Plus, not released until 20 years after the truck was built.

You don’t have to reach as far in that truck. My F150 you have to stretch.

My M3 had the previous version, I liked it. It was simple, though I swear some buttons did absolutely nothing.

My ‘02 S10 had that 1.5 DIN radio too. I opted for the cubby. It was really small, but I found that more handy than just having black space above and below the radio.

PS the doors cards are stupid easy to take off. You'll have the speakers done in 10 minutes.

They like to make it complicated.

Fun fact: The radio on my A6 was made in Japan and the thing behind it was made in England.

Thinking about upgrading the stereo in the TrailBlazer (one speaker works, and the menu option knob thing no longer works. Bass on +3 isn’t always fun), and I’m thinking about getting that head unit with Pioneer speakers and possibly a sub, we’ll see.

A sub might be next for me depending on how well the bass comes through these speakers. I have to buy a special box for behind the seats in my single cab though. $300 without a sub iirc.

My potential system is roughly the same price, but I have to get rear door speakers as well. The TrailBlazer came with a 10 inch sub in LTZ form, so all the hookups are there.
